There’s already a brilliant, comprehensive review of this gallery from a couple of years ago, but I just wanted to add that it’s great to escape to in the run-up to Christmas or when the city centre cafes are really busy. I’ve never failed to get a seat in the gallery cafe and it really is peaceful when everything outside is in a mad rush. They do a cake and coffee deal (very tempting), delicious soup, and you can also get a loyalty card stamped to save up for a free hot drink.

If, like me, you keep intending to see exhibitions and then find they’ve closed, you can sign up on the website for a free must-see museum membership where they match your interests to offers at the Laing and 8 more museums and galleries in Tyneside.
