10 minutes from Potes, Cantabria, N Spain, are 8 rural apartments known as Casa de las Chimeneas in the beautiful valley of Cereceda.
What a fantastic place to stay once you have wound your way up the 700 metres to find breathtaking views of the Picos de Europa. The houses in the small village of Tudes with its 30 or so inhabitants, depict the typical architecture of this stunning area. A walkers paradise in a great, natural setting. Many of the villagers still live off the land and it is not unusual to see cattle, goats and sheep being herded through the village.
The apartments themselves, are fully independent, well equipped and furnished to a high standard. Medieval inspired paintings and artistic embellishments certainly add a lot of character. We stayed here for 3 nights and loved every minute of it. To wake up each morning with a view over the mountains was wonderful.
The communal area includes a large pool, gardens and a social room.
Once an old farm dwelling, the delightful and friendly owners converted what once stood there into the La Casa Chimeneas apartment blocks. It was opened in 2009. The owners live in the tavern opposite.
The Cantabrian beach is only about 40 minutes drive and apart from the lovely town of Potes nearby, there are many places of interest to visit. The area has a micro-climate which we discovered was most welcome, especially in October.
This part of Spain is home to the Iberian brown bear, wolf, ibex, wild boar and birds of prey. Abundant wild flowers and forests as well as peace and awe inspiring scenery all go to making this a wonderful experience.
I wouldn’t hesitate to return to my Casa!
