A group of four of us travelled to this “hall and gardens” yesterday seduced by the leaflet which we picked up as some tourist information in Cumbria.
First problem was finding it – on the leaflet it says follow the brown signs but we only found one and when we arrived the lady on the entrance cheerfully informed us there is only one! ( in 7 miles from Carlisle).
The leaflet does state that the house is being restored and that there are gardens. In fact there was no part of the hall that you could go in other than the ticket purchase area cum shop/ tea place , it was just a shell. Never mind we thought, it was only £4 entrance and there are the gardens. this latter was also a disappointment as the walled garden turned into just one wall with strawberries planted at its base – the bog garden had no plants in it other than wild ones planted by nature herself and there was just one short “scented border” ( pretty though not scented) and a lot of roses around the shell of the property. There is also only one toilet on site and parking in the field so I think they need to do a lot more work before the actuality lives up to the posh leaflet. We went around it in about 10 minutes.
Might be worth visiting in a few years!
