A wonderful day can be spent in the Scottish borders on the Arbigland estate visiting the John Paul Jones cottage and birthplace museum, and then walking on the estate to visit Arbigland garden, and if you wish take a House tour at 3pm. A circular walk on the estate and long the Solway Firth shore towards Carsethorn overlooking Cumbria can make it a full day out.
John Paul Jones was born in 1747 at Arbigland, and there are two audio visual presentations about his story as Father to the American Navy, as well as the cottage to visit. Teas are also available and the museum is open daily 10.30am to 5pm April to September.
Arbigland garden is being restored to its former glory, with lovely rhododendrons, lake and a beuatiful Japanese garden in a valley coming down to the shore, and new paths being laid out by bluebell woods, rose garden and a new herbaceous border. If you wish to be sure of seeing house and garden then you need to visit in the afternoon Thur – Sun and check in advance for the house tour availabilty.
