Also called the Municipal Gardens, these are in the centre of Funchal. They were laid out in the C19th on what was once the Convent of St Francis.
They are laid out with grass, specimen trees and flowerbeds. Lizards skitter along the stone walls in the sunshine.
There is a small pond with fountains. There are small statues as well as an events amphitheatre and a small cafe with very good and free toilets.
On a Saturday morning, stalls along the main path sell a variety of craft items.
