The Pie and mash shop is in a very old building in Whitby – it dates from the 1600s. So it is very small and quaint inside. They even have artefacts that have been found from the various occupants of the premises from shoemaker to pipe maker and other bakers.
They only serve pies, so if someone in your party does not like pies this is not the place for you to go. You can have pie, mash and peas or any variation of that but no other foods. There are a lot of pie fillings and some you will never have seen before. I tried the haggis and neeps (turnips) and it was really nice.
It opens and lunchtime and closes at 8pm, although last orders are around 7.40pm. It’s a great meal and I’m glad we went. We actually got off the last train from Pickering into Whitby and then wandered over the bridge for our food, that was about 5pm and it wasn’t very busy.
