For our post-Christmas trip to Trinidad and Tobago, the only carrier with direct flights was British Airways. At the time of booking, they flew three times a week to Port of Spain – on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. However, this schedule was changed to Monday, Wednesday and Friday a few weeks later. Fortunately, we had booked a package with Geodyssey, who re-arranged our itinerary to take account of the change.
Check in at Gatwick South was straightforward and relatively quick with a single queue for all flights. We were soon fast-tracked through security and settled in the BA business class lounge, where it was breakfast time, and also time for some fizz from a very well-stocked, self-service bar. There was a variety of seating styles, ideal for whiling away a couple of hours.
The 12.15pm flight began boarding an hour beforehand. It was an older style plane with a business class configuration of 2-4-2 over 5 rows and whilst moaning about paying to reserve seats, I was pleased not to be seated in the middle. Champagne was served, and orders taken for our first tipple from the bar, and lunch. We took off 30 minutes late, and unusually never made up time. Due to strong winds and turbulence, the seat belt sign remained on for significant periods, with the meal service being suspended twice.
After G&Ts, we both enjoyed smoked mackerel pate, served with Severn and Wye Salmon, followed by a baked cod fillet with creamed spinach and new potatoes, accompanied by a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Instead of dessert, we chose a selection of cheese with fruit chutney, crackers and a glass of port. Everything was all delicious and well presented.
The in-flight entertainment system was easy to use, offering a range of films and TV options and we both found something to entertain us during the 9.5-hour flight.
Biscuits and drinks were available during the flight, and prior to landing, a ciabatta was served with a choice of sirloin steak of grilled halloumi with a large blueberry muffin. Both were a little unnecessary after such a filling lunch.
The cabin crew were excellent: friendly and always on hand if you needed anything. Despite the late arrival, we were pleased with our BA experience.
The return flight, four weeks later, was equally good. Check-in was efficient, boarding began early, and the selection of films had changed with lots of new releases. We landed 30 minutes ahead of schedule and disembarked quickly. The only downside was the food offering. Despite being seated in the third row as before, there was only one portion of fish left, and I found the vegetarian option of gnocchi in a pumpkin sauce, was not to my taste. However the delightful crew member who served us, noticed this and, at the end of the flight, presented me with a box of Lindt chocolates to make up for it.
