Hubby pulled another rabbit out of the hat – & whisked us off to Rome (for a romantic break; Wedding Anniversary treat). Lots of walking, but taxis are easy to flag down (& they don’t expect a tip)! One main recommendation is to book private tours for the major attractions. We were so glad of this (i.e. Colosseum & Vatican City) – as we had access to areas that other visitors didn’t, plus you skip a long queue (often 3 hours+).
It’s not cheap, but well worth the outlay – as it leaves the rest of the day to stop in one of the many piazzas (for a well-earned drink). Maybe book an evening food & wine tour?
Everywhere you turn, there is beautiful architecture / attractions (& fountains aplenty).
Also there are several taps – to top up your water bottle for free (as restaurants charge for water, when dining there). Tasty food (carb-heavy) & delicious wines / cocktails).
A little bit of Italian goes a long way; learn the basics & you’ll be appreciated.
Plus there are the usual hawkers (peddling tat or inviting you to dine at their eatery).
Trattorias are much cheaper & do more rustic dishes; ristorantes offer more choice.
Osterias are wine bars, who will also serve simply meals. Enjoy La Dolce Vita!!
