This was a spur of the moment booking and we had no idea where we were going, apart from Somerset. We were blessed with beautiful weather and the hotel didn't disappoint. They had upgraded us so we had the Garden Room which was lovely. A large bathroom to the right as we entered the room and then up three steps to the main bedroom and lounge area. It had a dual aspect and a fireplace with an electric woodburner in it which made the room extremely cosy. The bed was very comfortable and it was lovely to be able to curl up on the sofa with our books instead of lying on the bed. Downstairs there was a very welcoming seating area with big chairs and an other electric fire where we waited to go into to dinner with an aperitif. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and couldn't do enough for us. the only thing for us that let it down was the food. Beautifully presented it just wasn't quite right for us. A personal thing I know but I had coq au vin one evening and it was served with the skin on and the bones in the joint and it was so dark (atmospherically very good) I couldn't see what I was doing and there was no side plate to put all the "bits". My husband had a steak au poivre and it was served on top of his chips which made them very soggy. Also, we had four different dishes all with sauces and we felt that there was little to distinguish them. As I say this was a personal thing as one lady we heard was exclaiming that the meal she had the night before was the best she had ever had! A definite rating of 8/10 and I would go back.
