A modern day musical with shades of Billy Elliot;
‘Everybody’s Talking about Jamie’ encapsulates perfectly the tribulations of being a teenager, and the inspiring message of following your dreams. The story is light hearted in tone but with underlying poignant moments exploring stigmatisation, prejudice and emotional family dynamics.
We follow the story of a young boy called Jamie New, who takes the bold first step to pursuing his ambition of becoming a drag queen. Whilst some of the costumes are outrageous and wild; the perspectives which the show provides into the world of drag provide a fascinating and moving insight. Be it the teacher who patronises Jamie for his career goals; the devoted mother who stands firmly by him; the evil father who abandons him and refuses any association, or even the playground bully who ridicules his every move. As we follow the story, we understand how each of these figures has shaped Jamie as a person, and ultimately made him into a remarkable, endearing and downright hilarious individual with a lot of sass and a lot of potential!
Enter this show with an open mind and be prepared to laugh and cry at the weird, wonderful and altogether fabulous world of drag queens. With the story line very much grounded in present day – featuring 2017 references in the song lyrics and dialogues; this truly is a modern, feel good musical, featuring some incredible singers and dancers.
The charismatic Jamie – a standout performance by John McCrea who is quite simply perfect in every way – is guaranteed to draw you in, and indeed leave everyone talking about him!
