I planned this visit to Doxford Hall Hotel at short notice as a late winter indulgence and it proved to be an absolute delight. Originally designed and built in 1817, this fine Georgian house has been sympathetically and extensively restored and refurbished. Most striking for me is the fact that money and resources are being used to restore and develop the garden which includes a walled garden, wooded walks, a beautiful head gardener's house which can be hired and a large yew maze planted by local children in 2000. In February there were masses of snowdrops and the first daffodils appearing but I plan to revisit in summer to see the herbaceous and rose beds.
The food was excellent, the room sumptious and the pool and spa facilities first class. Staff were friendly, helpful and attentive. At my second breakfast the waitress remembered how I like my coffee; these thoughtful acts distinguish a great experience from the general acceptable standards found in many 4 and 5 star hotels.
I look forward to returning and would recommend Doxford Hall to anyone looking for a relaxed and enjoyable retreat.
