I had not visited Dover Castle since I was a child so we were well overdue a visit and it was nothing like I remembered.
We started with the Great Tower and climbed the spiral staircase visiting various rooms on the way up. There was a real fire burning in one of the great halls and these were furnished as they used to be centuries ago.
What really struck us was the thickness of the walls which were maybe 6 feet thick in places. We made it to the roof and the views were awesome. We had perfect weather with clear blue skies and we could easily see France. Well worth the climb!
Next was the Museum which as also very interesting (and I don’t like museums!) and then we wandered round the battlements taking in the views until we reached the tunnels.
We did the tour and learnt all about the Dunkirk evacuation. All beautifully produced by movies inside the tunnels.
We then walked back up the hill (phew!) to the Ancient Church and Roman Lighthouse. These had substantial scaffolding which was open to the public. I couldn’t resist the climb up 111 steps for a fantastic view of the Port of Dover at the top!
We actually ran out of time and will have to go back another day for the Hospital.
An excellent day out.
