On the side of the A944, this is one of the best examples of a Motte and Bailey castle in Scotland. Built in the 12thC, it was the principle castle of the Earl of Mar until the 13thC when the larger stone castle at Kildrummy was built 10 miles to the north east.
The grassy motte still stand 18’ high and is surrounded by an impressive bank and ditch. There is parking off the road and it is possible to walk around the ditch if you want to stretch your legs. Otherwise admire from the road as you drive past.
