We were lucky to get to see it when it was first released, and even though it seems to have had mixed reviews, we really enjoyed it. It is an excellent mix of very mature well-known British actors and actresses – something we do much better than the American film industry, I think, where actors are not allowed to age naturally!
It was always going to be difficult to follow the original TV series, but they did capture the essence of each character beautifully. Captain Mainwaring was suitably inept, Pike earnest but unworldly. Catherine Zeta Jones was ideal as the beautiful spy, a temptress to captivate Mainwaring, though not part of a story-line we had seen before. And we loved the supporting cast of old ladies from the village (most of them having been in a Miss Marple film at some stage!) who saw through Zeta Jones’ disguise because of the clothes she wore. It all ends well with the Home Guard being the true heroes they are. So, it was a very enjoyable experience, everyone leaving the cinema with a smile and a chuckle.
