Reasons for trip

Personal / family celebration

I treated my wife to a surprise visit to Coombe Abbey recently to celebrate her birthday. We had afternoon tea, evening dinner, bed and breakfast and it was everything that I had hoped.

The entrance to the reception, being part of the original 12th century abbey was like the holding area of an Alton Towers ride – a bit dark, a bit spooky but very exciting, complete with pulpit, confessionals, etc

We stayed in the Berkley Suite which is a large “feature” room with a huge four poster bed and amazing decor. A climb up a spiral staircase is needed to reach the bathroom which has a large walk in power shower as well as a free standing bath in the middle of the room. Luckily the weather was great and we had a walk in the grounds. I admit that we didn’t see all 500 acres but there are lakes, woodlands and lots of wildlife.

All of the food was excellent, with service to match. The restaurant staff in a place like this are polite as you would expect and call you sir and madam, but they are also up for a laugh which made meal time enjoyable. Yes it’s not a cheap place to visit but for a special occasion I would thoroughly recommend “Coombe Abbey”:http://www.coombeabbey.com/?gclid=COmhu6yn5MUCFYnItAod4AsADw
