We've been going to Colchester Zoo for many years & are so impressed at the way they continually improve the zoo. The enclosures are now fitting to the size of the animals but even in the large enclosures, the large glass windows give you a great opportunity to see the animals. There are plenty of indoor parts, which give you a break from the cold, so it's still fun to visit on a really cold day. The zoo has made a big effort to add things that make the visit more exciting, such as a speed trap to measure how fast you can run vs. the animals or a hang tough to see if you can hang as long as an Orangutang. Our kids are actually in their twenties & still enjoyed our day out at the zoo. They have also made huge improvements in hygiene, with many stations throughout the zoo to sanitise your hands if you have touched the animals or got them dirty in some other way. There is a good variety of animals who all look well cared for. I would recommend a visit, it's good enough to go out of your way for. One care – it is naturally very hilly, so if you have mobility issues it is hard going. There is a discount for disabled visitors.
