We stayed at Saltburn on Sea self catering with sea views, and walked the Northern section of the Cleveland Way which is a well marked National Trail 109 miles long from Helmsley over the heather on the North York Moors to Saltburn on Sea, and then South along the coast to Filey.
The heather moorland was a beautiful mauve in August, and you pass ruined abbeys, Captain Cook’s Monument and climb the amazingly shaped Roseberry Topping with views down the coast. The coastline is exceptional, and in many places the beaches are quiet yet fantastic. We only managed to go south as far as Staithes, but have previously walked through Whitby to Scarborough. The buses are good for return trips along the coast after your days walk.
We still have Scarborough to Filey to walk on another holiday which we are looking forward to.
You could walk the whole of the Cleveland Way in 9 days, but we like to have time to visit the Abbeys, sit at the top of Roseberry Topping and take in the view, and take the boots off and paddle in the sea! Lots of wonderful fresh fish to eat en route, and plenty of facilities along the coast.
