We were lucky enough to win a 2 night trip to stay at Clare Island Lighthouse on the Wild Adlantic Way,Co Mayo in S.Ireland.A place we would never have considered for a break let alone heard of!
Not the easiest place to get to,we went via Knock Airport, taxi to Roonagh Pier,a 20 minute ferry ride to Clare Island and then another taxi up to the Lighthouse.Very well worth the journey which was not too taxing for us in our early 70’s!
The Island only has 150 residents,1 pub,1 shop and a community centre and a few B&Bs. But what it does have is a lovely beach, views of the Adlantic to die for, very friendly locals and peace and quiet. The Island is very rugged with only 2 paved roads, the rest are very bumpy,so not suitable for everyone.
The Lighthouse itself at the “top” end of the island,is a quiet oasis. Accommodation for 12 people,it is very intimate. Meals are taken together in a beautiful dining room to encourage conversation with fellow guests from around the world. While we were there,it was Irish,English,Dutch,Canadian and Americans, which made it so much more interesting and friendly.
The food is 1st class, ditto accommodation. NO tv (but wi-fi is available) which gives you the chance to just enjoy the peace,in a beautiful location, something totally different
We will certainly remember the few days we spent there,it was a joy.
