The small city of Ripon is gorgeous. Bursting with lots of independent retailers all offering something unique creating a much different vibe to usual high streets.
On our way to the wonderful 7th century Cathedral we chanced upon CHIMES less than 50 yards from this religious site and so glad we did.
There are many tearooms in the city but I do think we found the best. Owner Mark has created a warm friendly environment in which to rest weary legs and revitalise for another bout of shopping and discovery. Fulfilling a long held ambition Mark opened Chimes 2 years ago and it is going from strength to strength. It is his pride and joy and rightly so. He has chosen his staff with care and all are very friendly and eager to help.
I always judge a cafe usually by it’s coffee. It is surprising how many still offer poor quality tasting brown liquid. Not here in Chimes. Oh no! A beautiful Americano with attitude – absolutely delicious. Every coffee bean has a tale to tell.
Chimes offers great value food and beverages in a relaxed friendly atmosphere. There is a nice garden in which to enjoy the sun. There are options for Vegans, vegetarians and gluten free too. The choice of hot dinners, snacks, paninis, baguettes, toasties and light lunches is impressive.
Created fresh daily using locally sourced ingredients. Well priced and well presented. And for those who don’t care about the waistlines (and why not- we are here on Earth for a good time not a long time so make the most of it -SO EAT CAKE!) there is an excellent choice of cakes. You can always buy a bigger belt!
Mark’s cherry and marzipan scones deserve a Michelin star all for themselves. Truly memorable. So good that he ships a parcel full down to London every couple of weeks to an eager devotee.
So for delicious food served by charming staff in attractive surroundings head for CHIMES on Kirkgate. Nothing else to say except you will not be disappointed.
