This visit was the first on our amazing trip to South Africa. We landed in Cape Town in the morning, checked into our hotel in the suburb of Somerset West then headed straight for our first animal encounter.
The Outreach is a charity project that isn’t very big, but does offer a range of African wildlife and some experiences that certainly we’ve never had before. Within a few minutes of arriving there, only a few hours after our plane landed, we were in an enclosure stroking two baby cheetah cubs! What a start to our holiday! I must add that the ‘stroking’ was very controlled. We had strict instructions to touch only their ears and top of their heads – no straying to their stomachs or paws! After all, they’re kittens and like to ‘play’!
The other animal that intrigued us because we’d never seen one before was a caracal – another member of the cat family, with large pointed ears and apparently the ability to jump to incredible heights from a standing start! I’ll attach pics.
They’ve got bat-eared foxes, meerkats etc. and lots of activities you can join in with these animals, which you can read about on their website… http://www.cheetah.co.za/
For us, it was certainly an unforgettable introduction to South Africa!
