Reasons for trip

Almost hidden away in a secret corner of Shaldon, on the other side of the mouth of the River Teign from Teignmouth, is an excellent little cafe that has a micro-brewery attached to it! You probably wouldn’t get there by accident, but if you want to try it I’d recommend crossing the river from Teignmouth on the ferryboat, then walking up the hill, passing the Ness Hotel towards Shaldon Zoo. Opposite the zoo is a car park, at the side of which stands Cafe Ode. The views back across the estuary towards Teignmouth are amazing!

You can sit either outside or in, service is informal and there is an ever-changing menu with some really interesting dishes. On our visit there, as part of a group, we sat in the restaurant from where a window looks into the next room which houses the Two Beach Brewing Co, who make craft beers using local ingredients. We were treated to a talk on their brewing process, tastings of their various ales, all followed by a simple (but delicious!) fish and chip supper.

If you’re ever in the Teignmouth area, I’d thoroughly recommend the ales, as well as the supper!
