This is more a comment about the food festival that was held recently in the grounds of the abbey, rather than a review of what goes on inside it. My wife and I did visit the interior of the abbey – as tourists – and found a wonderful building in a very good state of repair. It was one of the most interesting cathedral-like buildings we have ever seen!
The food festival, however, was somewhat disappointing. There were few food stands in comparison with other fairs we have been to, with a distinct shortage of tastings and samples! Things improved on the balcony area of the restaurant, however, where the drinks stands were, and we managed to sample, cider, beer and coffee.
What made the whole morning quite surreal was that, in spite of few visitors at the time we were there, the fair was inundated with more than one coach load of French students, who seemed rather bemused by the experience of visiting an abbey and finding food and drink stalls in the grounds!
