If you’re looking for a hotel in Edinburgh do have a look at The Bonham in Drumsheugh Gardens. Lying in the City’s vibrant west end it has been recently refurbished with having two million pounds spent on it and it shows.

What you have here is an extremely comfortable, luxury boutique hotel only ten minutes’ walk from the hustle and bustle of cafés, restaurants and bar of Princess Street yet it is set in an oasis of peace and quiet in an oh so typical leafy Edinburgh Square.

In fact, as a resident of the hotel you have access to this green space roughly half the size again of a football pitch with it shady trees and tables and benches. Getting the key from reception allows you to take your drinks and sit quietly in the evening glow with the only sound being the birds singing.

Our bedroom was simply lovely with wonderful views across the city and Dean Bridge to the hills of Fife beyond. The furniture was extremely comfortable, and the mattress was one of the finest I have ever encountered. I was surprised that there was no separate shower and you had to step into the bath, but this was a small price to pay for such a room. In fact the shower head was one of the biggest I have ever seen and the water was hot instantly with a very fast temperature control.

The staff were very attentive and helpful at all times especially when it came to advice about places to see or eat in the city. Were leaving to explore one day it started to drizzle and one the staff ran after us to offer one of the hotels complementary umbrellas.

There is a small, secure car parking area at the rear of the hotel but just twenty minutes of walking found us in the Old Town and the Royal Mile.

Twenty minutes in the other direction brought us to Leith and the hidden delights of Valvona and Crolla, Scotland’s oldest Italian delicatessen and wine merchant and we returned via the Princess Street Gardens stopping at one two places along the way for a glass of wine and a snack.

A great deal of thought has gone into the furnishings of The Bonham and we found the lounges and bar seating luxurious and very comfortable. The whole ambiance of the hotel is one of an upmarket country house where nothing is too much trouble. If you want a hotel that is close enough to Edinburgh to easily explore the City yet seems far enough ay to enjoy the silence of the countryside, then do consider The Bonham. I simply can’t recommend it enough, a lovely place to stay and relax.
