Whilst staying in Jamaica, we enjoyed exploring the parts of the country that were more remote, and off the beaten track. The Black River was one of those destinations.
It was located at the opposite end of the island to where we were staying, and we took an organised coach from our hotel.
It was a long journey, up into the mountains, through villages, most of which seemed very poor and consisted of tiny houses, many of which had tin roofs. The roads were often bumpy too, but it was really fascinating seeing how the people lived in this part of the world.
Eventually we arrived at our destination, The Black River. It had reeds on the banks, and when we looked carefully, we saw a crocodile!
We were booked to go on a boat up the river, which was open topped, with a canopy protecting you from the sun. It wasn’t crowded on the boat, so you could see lots.
We made our way up through the mangroves, seeing many different sorts of birds and wildlife. Every so often, the eagle eyed captain pointed into the water, and there in front of us were more crocodiles swimming!
The boat trip lasted about an hour, and on our return, we had a simple Jamaican jerk chicken lunch which was delicious.
This excursion was a long tiring day, but as long as you plan to take a few days in your hotel resort afterwards to recover, it’s well worth the travelling!
