There are many small biscuit manufacturers throughout Brittany. We visited one near Pointe du Raz, having seen the advance sign on the roadside.
Lescoff is a small settlement close to the tip of the peninsula and the major tourist attraction of Pointe du Raz. (We took one look at the huge and very full car park and people scurrying around like ants and decided that although it might merit 3*s in Michelin Green Guide it didn’t in our book. If you like scenery to yourselves this is not the place to go.)
As well as the biscuit factory there is an extremely good shop as well as a large car park.
It is possible to go into the factory and watch biscuits or cakes being made and packed. There were samples of the biscuits (palets the day we visited) to try. We tried not to look too greedy. They were very good. Breton cooking involves the use of large quantities of butter which can be smelt in the air when baking
There is a large, brightly lit and very pleasant shop. This has further samples of all the different biscuits and cakes to try. We can heartily recommend the kouign amann, especially the one with chocolate. This is a bit like a lardy cake made with butter rather than lard and with a sweet glaze. It is decidedly more-ish and you regret it too late…. The labels says 12 servings. We did managed to make ours do eight.
We preferred the thicker palet biscuits to the thinner and crispier galettes. The Breton cake is a bit like a cross between a sponge cake and shortbread made with lots of butter and again more-ish.
The gift shop sold a wide range of biscuits in either boxes or tins. There were locally produced preserves, ciders, sardines in decorative boxes (Douarnenez is an important sardine port), pates, soups etc. There was a good range of gifts including Faiance ware, place mats, table linen, calendars, CDs, books etc. We bought all our presents (including some Christmas presents) and it was only day 2 of the holiday. That is an all time record for us.
Even though the car park was busy and there were a lot of people in the shop it didn’t feel crowded or busy. Checkout was swift and courteous.
