Having docked in Bonn for the day, I decided to forego the tour and go walkabout on my own as I wanted to fully experience Beethoven Haus. Another lady asked if she could accompany me which worked out just fine.
We easily found the house in the main shopping area of Bonn. Bought our tickets and were then politely requested to cross the road to put our small pack backs in lockers in the basement of the museums shop opposite. We re- entered the museum (Beethoven Haus) to be instantly and firmly pulled out as the fire alarm went off. We smelt something and took refuge in the shop doorway opposite. We were holding our breath. I was terrified at the thought of watching such a historic building and contents being damaged, or worse.
In what seemed like moments, three fire engines screamed to a halt outside. It was all action. Fortunately, all was well. Electrical problem from work going on inside, quickly resolved.
We were then allowed back in and what a joy it was. If you enjoy the music of Beethoven you will love this place. So much personal history, artefacts, scores etc. In one room e were four booths were we could listen to a different piece of music in each with good quality headphones. We sat and enjoyed the music in blissful solitude. The only other visitors were the people on the tour who did a whistle stop tour and did not have time to listen.
A good decision to go it alone and much cheaper!
