Last year I had the opportunity to holiday in Australia. Initially It seemed quite daunting to go on such a journey but everything was so well organised any worries soon disappeared. The company I went with is called Traveleyes and this is a company with a difference as it caters for visually impaired travellers as well as sighted with the sighted acting as the ‘eyes’ of their fellow travellers.
Whilst there, we visited four different locations, Sydney, Ayres Rock, Cairns and Melbourne, all of which were so different to each other.
Sydney is a bustling, cosmopolitan city and it was wonderful to see in person the iconic Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Ayres Rock is a truly magical place . The colours are so bright and to watch the sun rise over Uluru was truly amazing,
Cairns is semi Tropical much quieter city but very pretty. It was while we were here that we visited the Great Barrier Reef. We took a trip on a small semi submersible boat which enabled us to view the reef from underwater. It was a wonderful experience to see all the beautiful coloured fish and coral.
Melbourne with so much history and beautiful buildings. And of course the old tram which runs round the centre of the city. There are more modern trams but it was much more fun on the old tram.
The geography and temperatures varied so much between each location it really was like visiting four different countries. was definitely a holiday to remember.
So far I have been on 11 holidays over the past 5 years with Traveleyes and have travelled to many beautiful and exotic places I never imagined I would ever see. I am sighted so act as a guide. Being the “eyes” for your fellow traveller is a very rewarding experience and has enables me to appreciate the sites I see to a far greater extent and I have made so many new friends, both sighted and visually impaired.
