If any of you were forced to read Margaret Laurence’s book, The Diviners, in high school don’t let it put you off checking out this play in Stratford, Ontario. We’re older now and have a different perspective. My sister and I saw it this past weekend at the Tom Patterson Theatre and it was a delight.
I don’t remember much about the book from school so I went in with an open mind and really enjoyed the production. The play is told through the use of flashbacks to the main character’s youth with both time periods on stage together. The use of a fiddler, a bagpiper and a First Nation drummer representing the different cultures making up the Métis nation was very effective. This adaptation received a standing ovation all around.
Paid parking at the theatre is $25 though we always manage to find free parking further down the lake at the Festival Theatre or on one of the streets if you are okay to walk.
The theatre has a lovely café in the lobby as well if you want to take in lunch before the matinee. You can also order food and drinks to be ready for you to pick up at intermission.
The Diviners | Stratford Festival is running until October 2, 2024.
