Don’t write off Amsterdam as just a party place for sex n drugs n rock n roll. My wife and I are just back from our second visit there and what a great place for a fill of culture.
yes it can be young and relaxed and liberal but that is all part of it’s charm. Last time we went to The Amsterdam Museum, Anne Franks House, Rembrandthuis and the van Gogh Museum, all places not to be missed. We did miss the Rijksmuseum as it was closed, so we returned primarily for the Rembrandt exhibition. Rembrandt and the Nightwatch aside what a great museum it is. The joy of the golden age of Dutch art, The Cuyp landscapes, Vermeer and the daily life pictures, the self portraits, the bonkers Breugal. These are all just paintings, there is furniture, armour, statues etc. If you get stuck for time, aviod the “human clock” which will help to pass more time.
Also in Amsterdam is a branch of the Hermitage Museum. Again, this has a huge room at the moment dedicated to 30 glorious portraits from the golden age. It also has a pot pouri of pieces to give you a taste of the original Hermitage.
Still got time left? How about a visit to the kattenkabinet, a museum featuring cats on the golden bend at Herengracht. It is the only building open to the public on the golden bend and worth a visit for that alone.
Starting to get a taste for Amsterdam? they do of course do some of the best sweet and savoury pancakes to be found anywhere in the world.
Amsterdam is of course flat and very walkable and everyone speaks English. Whats not to like?
