Aigueze is a beautiful ancient village in the Ardeche region on the side of a beautiful gorge. There are the usual riverside/ water activities and the village is pretty with lots of history. If you have very limited activity some of it might be a bit difficult to access. We like walking and plotted a number of walks using the very useful guides available in local bookshops. The authorities have gone to a lot of trouble signposting and marking walking routes. We quite enjoyed the walking, and found routes easy to follow. Our main problem was that we stayed in Aigueze itself. The hotel was very basic, more a building with bedrooms in it. Rooms lacked basic amenities we expect now such as hairdryer, tv and radio. Lighting was poor with only a small mirror in the bathroom. But apart from this the main problem was that everything was closed by 9pm unless you were finishing a meal. We found that the restaurants in the area serve pretty much the same menus….and are expensive. So nothing to do but sit in your room!! So unless you are the very early to bed sort, we’d advise staying somewhere a bit livelier with a day trip to Aigueze. Of course the problem with much of France is that the majority of bars etc are closed at precisely the times when you want to sit with a coffee or cold drink and watch the world go by, especially in smaller places. Choose with care.
