Morecambe is a great place to visit. We travelled with our friends to experience another Steampunk event entitled “A Spendid Day Out”. It was a fun occasion with some impressive costumes on show. We were also entertained on the day with music and performances such as the Ravens Morris Dancers and other great artistes. Inside the former Edwardian railway station building there were stalls selling a variety of vintage items. There were also some exhibits within the iconic Midland Hotel on the seafront. The weather was fine but rather breezy for those wearing fancy hats.
The seafront itself is very attractive with views over the bay towards the Lake District. Along the promenade there is a series of sculptures of seabirds called The Tern Art Project. There is also an inlaid path from the Festival Market made up of poems, jokes and quotes by famous entertainers. After taking pics of the Eric Morecambe statue, we stopped at the SO cafe on the corner of Skipton Street. Here there was a varied lunch menu and a good selection of cakes. It was a welcome sit down.
There was a downside to this splendid day out though. The journey to our destination was horrendous with queues of traffic on the M6 motorway. When we eventually reached Morecambe, we found the Old Station Car Park. Then it took a while driving around to find a space and then more time to locate the parking meter. Followed by a visit to a shop to obtain the correct change. So, noting the time we calculated when to return to collect the car before starting our journey home. What we were not aware of, was the fact that the time is calculated by ANPR from the moment your car enters the car park.Subsequently we received a letter through the post indicating that we spent 10 minutes more time than we had paid for and got a £100 fine. Splendid!
This has not put us off visiting Morecambe again. There is a branch line railway station in the centre of town. Just bring me sunshine and we’ll catch a train….
