Silver Travel Book Club

June 2024 – The Bordeaux Book Club

We’ll explore a different destination for each Book Club, and a lucky Silver Travel Book Club reader can win a free copy of that month’s book.

This month, our Silver Travel Book Club is reading all about… well, a book club!

Set in the idyllic region of Bordeaux, this light-hearted page-turner tells the story of Leah, who moves to France with her family in the hope of becoming self-sufficient.

But in truth, it’s not the ‘good life’ she’d imagined, as three hours of digging barely yield a single straggly carrot. Worse, her teenage daughter is acting up, and her husband seems to find every strange excuse under the hot French sun to disappear.

So, when her friend entreats her to join the new book club she’s forming, Leah decides it’s something she will do for herself. The chance to make new friends, to drink a few glasses of wine, and to escape into stories that take her miles away from the life she’d thought would be her own happy-ever-after.

Prepare for a wonderfully warm read as you join Leah and the book club’s ‘misfit’ members on a journey of fun, friendship and self-acceptance. Described by one critic as “like a cold glass of Chablis on a hot summer’s day, this lovely bookish story will refresh and restore you with its quirky mix of characters and lush French setting”. What more could you want from a summer book!

Discover Bordeaux for yourself

If reading all about Leah’s adventures in Bordeaux has given you the appetite to visit the region for yourself, check out our exclusive ‘Taste of Bordeaux Wine Cruise’ with AmaWaterways. You’ll enjoy iconic châteaux, timeless vineyards and delicious wine tastings on this wine-themed journey, hosted by a dedicated wine expert.

  1. I remember being taken on a holiday round France with my two aunts when I was 13. I have happy memories of Les Landes – a (then) deserted area of pine forests, sand dunes and long sandy beaches… Is it a mistake to go back?

  2. Obviously I would visit a vineyard and its wine cellar. Many years ago we parked our campervan alongside a river in the Bordeaux area and it was so beautiful and free!!

  3. We are going there in August and apparently you can have a Beer of Bath and have a drink in it too. Very unique.

  4. Help with harvesting the vines then enjoy a meal with fellow harvesters and enjoy wine from that vineyards previous harvest

  5. Pretty obvious answer but I would like to do a little (or maybe a lot) of wine tasting!!

  6. Climb the Tour Pey-Berland to admire the city views then reward myself with lunch & wine afterwards!

  7. Have never been but would love to explore a new region, to me, in France and experience the food, wine and scenery.

  8. Would love to visit the vineyards to see the locations of the wines I have drunk at home.

  9. I would like to see the Vineyard and taste the famous Bordeaux wines.

  10. Seeing and visiting the chateaux and vineyards on the Gironde and sampling the wines would be my ideal. I last visited Bordeaux in the early 60’s and was given a taste of vin ordinaire which was just that. Fortunately, it did not put me off so a return trip could just be perfect.

  11. I would love to sample the red wine and take long walks in the countryside.

  12. Sounds a great read. money is tight so to own a new book would be lovely. Thank you

  13. Spain is a country I have always wanted to go to ,but I have never had a chance to do this. So if euro camp is there that would be fantastic prize to win.

  14. Bordeaux is a lovely city with interesting museums and nearby vineyards. We haven’t been there for over 30 years so it would be great to rediscover.
