I loved both the house and the gardens. I am a garden lover but even if anyone was not particularly I don't think they could fail to enjoy this place. The planting is naturalistic. The garden was created by Christopher Lloyd and Edwin Lutyens. The design, layout and plantings show the particular styles of these men. There were meadows, borders, hedging, vegetable garden all of which were very beautiful. As I visited in July I probably saw it all during one of the best months. It was all very lush. Although I do a lot of gardening already I came away inspired and wanting to do more. The house and garden complement each other. The house is cottage-style and looks extremely old although it is actually a bit of a fake! However, it is in keeping with the gardens and the whole scene works well. There is also a plant nursery on site. Unfortunately I found the nursery to be a bit disconnected with the garden. They did not seem to know in the nursery what was growing in the garden and I wasn't able to buy examples of plants I had seen. Overall I would recommend a visit to Great Dixter most highly – particularly in July.
