Madeira is our go-to place with a moderate island climate. We have a friend who owns a property in Garajau literally on the edge of a 800ft drop! We have great difficulty in hotels with their lack of provision for non smokers in communal spaces, so renting this private property solves that, and we have a perfect view of the ocean and fabulous sunsets. The only other drawback is the North wind. When it blows planes cannot land at the airport. Took us 54 hours to get there once! Madeira is a very green Island with water cascading down from the plateau, particularly on the North side and channelled via levadas which make excellent walking routes. I particularly love the beautiful gardens and, oh, the amazing orchid houses. If you walk along nearby anywhere selling Madeira wine and their many liqueurs you will be offered tastings. You can find your walk rather more difficult after trying a few!!
