In this day of I-pads and instant entertainment, it’s very unlikely that we will ever see a return of children’s games that cost pennies or nothing at all.
Many will remember the game of marbles. All you needed was a hole in the ground, and if their wasn’t one handy, then you dug one in the dirt.
If ever you find yourself on the eastern edge of Dartmoor, then look out for a place called Bovey Tracy. Here you will find the House of Marbles.
It’s a great place to spend an hour or so, and there is no admission charge and plenty of free parking space.
The working glass works with a viewing gallery is one reason to visit, to witness first hand the fantastic skills of the glassblowers.
Alongside is a variety of interesting museum pieces, fascinating marble runs, including a very large noisy one, and a shop full of traditional games and unusual gifts, including some beautiful glass creations made on site.
If you’re hungry there is also the Orangery Restaurant to tickle your taste buds from a traditional English Breakfast to the inevitable Devon Cream Tea.
This is no seasonal attraction by the way. It’s open all year round!
