The Royal William Yard on Plymouth harbour was once the victualling and stores depot for the Royal Navy. Constructed between 1825 and 1831, the Royal William Yard is steeped in history and considered to be one of the most important groups of historic military buildings in Britain and the largest collection of Grade I Listed military buildings in Europe.It’s now being regenerated with many bars, galleries and shops, and is home to outdoor food markets, cinema and theatre performances.
From its website, what may not be obvious is that you can take a guided tour, but we did, and this proved to be very interesting, thanks mainly to our knowledgeable guide. It’s an outdoor tour, taking in the fortifications, and the various buildings around the yard, from the bakehouse to the brewery to the ammunition store – and more. You can get there and park quite easily, but can also arrive by ferry from Plymouth town centre. It’s well worth investigating if you’re interested in that kind of history, and is certainly an unusual day out.
