Much as I love Rome, London, and Vienna, Prague is Europe’s top touristic city and Prague Castle is one of Prague’s top sights, so much so that we don’t think in terms of ‘a visit to Prague Castle’. We require four visits to properly visit the castle.
For three of the four trips to Prague Castle, get there by taking metro to the Malestonska station. In front of the metro station, take the #18 tram to the top of Castle Hill. Looking out the left side of the tram as you ascend Castle Hill, you will see a pedestrian street at the top of the climb that leads to the entrance to the Castle (note: free WC on your right as you walk from the tram stop to the Castle entrance along this road).
Entrance is free to go inside the walls, but, as this is the largest castle in Europe– almost a village of its own– don’t be fooled by the free entrance. there are at least 4, or maybe 6, major sights within the castle walls that require separate entrance fees, or a combined ticket– St Vitus Cathedral, St Georges Hall, the Old Royal Castle, the Golden Lane, and the Museum. All are worth a visit, and that’s going to use up a good part of a day. That’s why we break a Castle visit into four trips.
A note on St Vitus Cathedral: This is a Gothic church. I don’t like wasting my time in Gothic church, but this is an excerption, a grand example of a stupid architectural style.
