Yesterday was warm so we set off to visit Scawby Hall in Scawby, only ten minutes drive from our home in Brigg. It was open from 1.30pm til 5pm on Sunday. It’s only open certain weeks of the year so you have to look it up on the internet. We paid £7 each for the guided tour of the house and it wasn’t crowded. The volunteer told us all about the paintings and who they were and the history of the previous owners of the house. It became more interesting as we got upstairs and heard tales about the marriages of the owners and saw wardrobes full of world war one uniforms. Old paintings and diaries and even some of Kate Greenaways illustrations were on display. Some paintings were very valuable and portraits extremely good. Horses featured strongly as a farming interest of the Nelthorpe family. Servants portraits too adorned the walls. Marvellous views of countryside from lots of the Windows appealed to me, and old furniture and the children’s room were interesting. Outside the Victorian gardens were most attractive. In fact I am going back this week to the gardens which are free to enter. I must get a photo of the attractive house with the gardens in the foreground. Also I want to visit the shop which sells produce from the gardens. St Hybalds church next door sells refreshments at the weekend. It was better than I expected.
