Reasons for trip

If going to the Vale of Glamorgan for a visit – The Heronston Hotel in Bridgend is ideally situated for both the country-side and the nearby seaside towns of Ogmore by Sea, Southerndown and Porthcawl. The hotel belongs to the Best Western chain and has a spa, and the food is extremely well prepared and tasty. There is much of historic interest nearby including Ewenny Priory, the ruins of Ogmore Castle situated beside the Stepping Stones over the River Ewenny. Also the beautiful Sand Dumes extending down to the sea can be accessed by walking over the Stepping Stones and then on down the road for a couple of miles through the village of Merthyr Mawr with its thatched cottages. Or if you prefer you can enjoy a pony trek to the beach though the Sand Dunes The stables are opposite the ruins of Ogmore Castle. Children as young as 4 years of age can be led across the river on a pony.

Southerndown, set down in the valley has a wonderful sandy beach when the tide is out. And from there there are wonderful walks along the to top of the cliffs to neighbouring bays. For people who like the thrill of fun fare rides Coney Beach in Porthcawl is ideal. May look a little tired but you can have one or two big rides without the long queues associated with the bigger fares.
