We’ve been travelling to Symi every couple of years for about fifteen years. It’s the only holiday destination we have returned to again and again. We love the walking on the island, the friendly people, the quietness… but most of all, the quality of Symiot food and restaurants has always been second to none.

this time however, we had our only bad experience in a restaurant. We sat down at a very busy restaurant, gave our order and waited, and waited… eventually our drinks were brought but they were the wrong drinks. We were brought the right ones when we pointed it out but still no food in sight. An hour after sitting down we asked, “Where is our food?”

” Coming right up”, was the answer, “What was it you ordered?”

Eventually our food arrived. However, my vegetable salad (I checked the menu three times, no meat mentioned whatsoever), had chunks of bacon in it.

There was no apology, just, “do you want something else?” By this time it was two hours after we had sat down. I had had a sip of water and nothing else in all that time.

“No” I replied, “It’s too late”

The bill arrived, including everything we had ordered as well as everything we hadn’t.

I could have coped with that but, when all of the other customers paid their bills, they were given a complimentary ice cream. We didn’t get one.

Mystifying.

This was coupled with some slight incidents of Skimpflation on the island but every other restaurant we visited was as wonderful as ever.
