Whilst you can often get good set meals in London, they’re often accompanied by expensive wine lists which then bump up the cost.

However, we found Prix Fixe Brasserie at 39 Dean Street, in London’s Soho which offered both – a two-course set lunch for £17.90 and house white at £23 a bottle. There was a good range of eight starters and seven mains, along with salads which could be served as either. In addition, a la carte specials attracted a supplement and the man with expensive tastes chose an entrecote steak, an extra £6. However, unlike many places which give an option of starter and main or main and dessert, desserts have to be ordered from the a la carte and I thought were expensive even for central London at £9.90.

Our starters included calamari, pork belly, and a Provençal Soup de Poisson whilst I chose a beetroot and goats cheese salad. Apart from the steak, others chose classic beef bourguignon despite it been very hot outside, and an Asian salad, more in keeping with the sunny weather. My smoked salmon omelette with frites and salad was excellent, and we were all pleased with our choices.

We managed to quaff three bottles of the French house white, and with a coffee and service, our bill came to £162.

On booking, we’d asked for a quiet table and were fortunate to be given a table in a corner, which was well out of the way, so we lingered and chatted. They were also very accommodating when we were running late and had to change our booking.

The restaurant has a small outside terrace and a sister restaurant, Pierre Victoire, a little further up Dean Street which I was told is a little smaller and has a slightly different menu.
