We spent a day and a night in Prague before taking a train into Saxony in Germany. My partner booked our hotel to be conveniently situated within a short walk of the railway station. He chose bed and breakfast at the Wenceslas Square Hotel in Mezibranska 13. No doubt he originally booked a reasonably priced twin-bedded room. This turned out to a huge apartment and we each had a king-sized bed and our own bedroom! From the balcony we had a splendid view of the Czech National Museum all lit up at night. Once midnight came all the illuminations were switched off and the surrounding area became surprisingly quiet. The hotel also provided a complimentary bottle of Merlot. However, as we are beer drinkers we left it intact for the next guests!
We had time during our stay to explore the city and admire the impressive architecture. This was not our first visit to Prague so, the fact that our stay was very short, was not a problem. For those who want to stay longer there are certainly plenty of attractions to be enjoyed. One tourist favourite is the Old Town Astronomical Clock in the Gothic Tower. I was there just before 12md with a huge crowd waiting for the clock to strike and for the twelve apostles to appear. You can take the visitor route inside to see the amazing interiors and the panoramic view from the top of the tower (but we did not have time on this occasion) Also adjacent to the old town is the church of Our Lady before Tyn. The building dates from the 14th century and is certainly impressive with its twin Gothic towers. Inside is a gallery of early Baroque, Renaissance and Gothic works of art. It is free to enter when there are no services taking place.
The city is famous for lots of stag weekends but the locality where we were staying was quite quiet.Just a few yards away from our hotel was Beer Point Bar. This was ideal for us as, back in Britain, we are members of CAMRA. You can taste 12 different kinds of beer sourced from all over the Czech Republic. We did not try them all on this occasion, but we did try the “cannabis” beer. It tasted really good and I did not feel too inebriated! The system for tasting was quite straightfoward. You bought a card from the person in charge and loaded a suitable amount of money (like an Oyster card) After choosing your beer you scanned the card on the screen and helped yourself. Simple!
It was a pleasant short visit to Prague before we continued on our journey to Saxony in former east Germany.
