  1. Many many years when daughter was about 7, we had a holiday in Northumberland over Christmas. (You can get an idea of how long ago it was as the s/c property still charged low season rates then…)

I’d planned to cook a Bernard Matthew’s turkey roast (remember them?) for Christmas lunch complete complete with all the trimmings. It was a rather basic cooker and even more basic equipment…

It was a lovely sunny morning, so after opening presents we decided to go for a walk before lunch – putting a pack of biscuits and a bottle of water in a rucksack. In fact it was such a nice morning it seemed a shame to go back to the cottage, so Christmas lunch was a bourbon biscuit washed down with water sitting on a seat overlooking the South Tyne Valley.

We eventually had out turkey roast (with a bottle of red wine) that evening. We still talk about it and agreed it was the best Christmas lunch ever!

  2. Barbecue prawns wrapped in bacon with a dry white and then burgers with Garnacha

  3. A beach picnic on the Greek Island of Alonissos. Feta, bread and olives and a bottle of very uncomplicated Retsina. (Hardly a connoisseur’s choice, but it’s all about the timing and the place!)
    It was perfection!

  4. The first time I used my new Pizza Oven. Pizzas were made from scratch with the help of my daughter and granddaughter including a special sweet one for her with chocolate spread in the crust 😋. Yes we burnt the edges and needed to practice our skills when it came to getting the pizza out of the oven but it all added to the fun. We complimented the pizza with a Merlot and a White Rioja.

  5. When we were touring the South Island of New Zealand we stopped one lunch time at a little van in a lay-by in Kaikoura overlooking the spectacular bay. A woman was cooking and selling fresh scallops from a little barbecue and we sat at her her fold out table to eat them. My husband commented that it was a pity we didn’t have a glass of red wine to drink with them. I was able to say, guess what, while he had been on a whale watching trip that morning, I had been shopping and had a bottle of New Zealand Merlot in the boot of the car. The woman on the food van produced a couple of plastic cups for us to use and that meal has always been our most memorable and delicious in those spectacular surroundings.

  6. November 2019 just before the world changed we were on the Bussell Highway near Margaret River Western Australia with my rarely seen family sharing a lovely lunch in the grounds of a winery drinking their perfect chilled Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, carefree and content!
Really looking forward to travelling back there next week for a long awaited reunion.

  7. A simple picnic while watching & listening to The BSO at one of their summer proms in the park with a lovely chilled bottle of Jacobs Creek wine is the perfect summer meal.

  8. My favourite picnics are those on Folkestone Sands, just a few miles from where I live. Reminiscent of my childhood are the cheese spread sandwiches which always have the added crunch of grains of sand! I relive my youth watching my grandchildren making memories so similar to my own. A cheeky glass of Merlot washes the grittiness from my mouth! Halcyon summer days!

  9. Great family Christmas day picnic on the sandy beach of Mullet Bay St.Maareten W.I
    Drinking chardonnay

  10. A bbq in our backyard with all the family a lovely sunny day and nicely chilled chardonnay

  11. Christmas Day bar b q in South Africa with family and friends after our son’s wedding. Definitely accompanied by sparkling wine!

  12. For me it was drinking Prosecco and having a picnic of smoked salmon and strawberries and cream whilst listening to an orchestra.
Apart from the amazing history of the iconic Rolls Royce company, the cars and aero industry and the wonderful orchestra the highlight of the event was the thunderous sound of the Harrier jet rising up behind the orchestra on stage!

  13. I always try to pair wine with the meal & where I am but the best has to be cheap & cheerful with outdoor food when camping – anything goes down well!

  14. I’ve had many picnics in the past – it was the only way we could afford a day out in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s – but the first picnics I had with wine every lunchtime was on a Naturetrek holiday to Corsica, all the food and drink magically appeared from the back of the minibuses, bought locally and prepared by the two leaders so there was no need to carry anything. The Spelunca Gorge walk from Evisa, however, was an exception. Everybody had to carry a couple of items of the food or drink in their rucksack and it was a relief when we arrived after a long descent to find the picnic spot was by the river. That day the sun shone on us as we ate our bread, cheese, ham, salad, chocolate and strawberries. It was idyllic. Our choice of wine each day was red or white; I can’t remember any names but it was probably French and I always chose the red as I like my white to be chilled.

  15. A fantastic picnic with our great friends at the side of Brazeau Reservoir in Alberta. Can’t beat good food, great conversation and a glass or two of delicious Merlot…and maybe a few beers…can’t wait to go back!

  16. One August in the late 1980s I was walking with my late friend Gianni in the hills of Friuli in Northern Italy. We passed a farm where he knew the brother and sister that were pasturing their cattle there for the summer. We walked across to say hello and were invited to sit with them for a lunch of cheese and local red wine. They were beautiful, friendly people who spoke no English; we communicated through Gianni. My friend died in the 1990s and I have many lovely memories of him, but that day, the simple meal and the lovely people who invited us to share it are lodged in my memory forever.

  17. I would love to cook a barbecue outside with yasty burgers and haloumi in my garden with my daughters

  18. Having helped to pick Malbec grapes in Mendoza, Argentina, with snow capped Andes in the distance what better place to sit outside and eat our Vegetarian Empanadas. filled with cheeses and vegetables. …
Plus Argentinian provoleta. A whole round of ooey, gooey provolone cheese, grilled to perfection and placed right on your plate from the pan, with a gorgeous fresh salad- what could be better?? Accompanied by a smooth Argentina Malbec with dark fruit character and spicy flavours. What a perfect way to finish the perfect day.

  19. we had a picnic by the Kalpies for one of my father in laws birthdays, the wine we had was Summer Red, which is sadly no longer produced

  20. It was our first holiday in France as a family. We had avoided going abroad when our girls were younger as my wife and I were firm believers in the fact that for a kiddie a beach an hour away by car was just as good as a beach twenty four hours away by plane. Also a lot less turgeversatious. However, now that the girls were that much older we thought that exposure to foreign climes and food would broaden their horizons. To that end the third night at the gite I fired up the barbie and produced the piece de resistance – snails. Stuffed with garlic butter and parsley. Guess what? Yes. No takers. Except me who ate the lot, washed down with a bottle or two of a crisp and nicely chilled Sancerre. I think the females of our party had burgers. Or something. I cared not as I was in gastronomic heaven. A truly memorable feast. (PS I suppose it helps if one has been brought up on cockles, mussels and laverbread).

  21. The whole family treated my mother to a holiday in Mauritius with her own butler. Unfortunately
her partner was ill and couldn’t go, so I stepped in (as you would!). Our holiday home was a minute from the beach, and the resort was nearly empty being the wrong time of year for a holiday there. But it didnt matter we were treated like Royals. We enjoyed a glass of wine every evening by the bar and a band played for us. It was magic. It was only at the end of the holiday, when we got our room bill we realised the wine had cost £18 a glass! But who cares! It was gorgeous wine and we had such an amazing time. Since I’ve taken my Mum on short break holidays and we always check the price before we order wine!! But it’s the best drink in the world, we wouldn’t be without a glass!

  22. My partners chicken and leek casserole with a bottle of NZ Sauvignon Blanc

  23. We recently visited Sāo Tomé and Principe and one morning were surprised with a breakfast picnic. Despite it being served on the beach, everything was beautifully presented and we tucked into scrambled eggs, colds meats and cheese, a variety of breads with jams, juices and coffee. But best of all was the bottle of Portuguese Mariana sparkling wine which arrived – despite it being only 8am, it seemed rude not to finish the bottle.

  24. Visiting New Zealand on my own once I took a walk and ended up further away from my Hotel than I intended. I came to a small village which had a Fish and Chip shop so I bought a bag of chips and then bought a mini bottle of prosecco from the food shop next door and I sat on the beach and had the best chips I have ever tasted in my life! The sun was just setting and it was a beautiful sunset and it was a meal I will never forget!

  25. Simple picnics work the best for me, out in the sunshine, laughing with friends tucking into my favourite reciepe of Coronation Chicken, a huge stick of crispy french bread and some salad leaves, all washed down with an Australian best, a Pink Yellow Glen. Heaven on a Summers Day.

  26. My favourite meal outdoors was when my family and I celebrated a big birthday together and we brought lots of dishes and shared lovely summer salads etc. I remember drinking a nice white wine but can’t remember which one

  27. My good friend Kay lives in Port Macquarie. She emigrated to Australia in the 60’s on the £10 ticket and has flourished. On my last visit, pre pandemic, we had a barbie on the beach. All the prawns you could eat, washed down by a deliciously chilled Chardonnay. Sea, sun, sand, great company and wine…What more could you ask for?!

  28. One Christmas I went to Holy Island in Northumberland – we stayed on the beach late at night with the frost on the ground and could see a glimmer of the northern lights in the sky. We lit a tiny fire and cooked marshmallows and drank with a fantastic red Shiraz from Australia.

  29. Barbecue at our friends house in Portaferry, Northern Ireland to celebrate a 40th birthday – great family occasion! Wine of the day (and night) was Villa Maria – Marlborough Lighter Sauvignon Blanc and Lighter East Coast Rosé – and the karaoke was great craic!

  30. Years ago our Family set off to picnic on Cannock Chase ! The unexpected snowfall set a more magical scene of a beautiful place and the Merlot helped to warm us !

  31. I drank the most amazing Shiraz in the Barossa valley with cheeses and biscuits in the most beautiful scenery in the sunshine. Winning this would bring back that memory

  32. My favourite (and most memorable) outside meal was on holiday with a friend in the ‘90’s in the South Island of New Zealand. We stopped at Lake Wakatipu, where we sat and admired the stunning scenery over fish and chips, and a delicious bottle of NZ Sauvignon Blanc that we had previously purchased from a nearby winery.

  33. I love a Summer Barbecue in our back garden with our closest friends, and a bottle of Sangria.
