June 2024: Spotlight on the Rhône River

This month’s Wine Club, in partnership with AmaWaterways, heads to the Rhône River.

Read on to find out more.

The Rhône River, which flows through Switzerland and France, is home to one of the most prestigious wine regions in the world, known for its diverse and high-quality wines.

Provencal Rosé wines, pale pink with low alcohol, are the “gold standard” for Rosés, typically blending Grenache, Cinsault, and Syrah. The Côtes de Provence Rosés are known for their crisp, fruity flavours with hints of pepper. Hermitage, an Appellation d’Origine Controlée (AOC), is renowned worldwide and best enjoyed matured, crafted from both red and white grapes.

During 1308 to 1388, the papal courts developed a taste for the local wine and promoted viticulture throughout the region. Wines from this region came to be known first as Vin du Pape and later as Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

The Rhône’s varied terroir—from granite in the North to clay and limestone in the South—combined with both traditional and modern winemaking practices, contributes to the rich, complex wines that define this prestigious wine region.

  1. Crisp Provencal Rosé wine is best served chilled. It is the bold enough to blend nicely with the flavours of grilled steak.

  2. A beautiful spinach & ricotta cannelloni with over roasted vine tomatoes and green olives with a drizzle of virgin olive oil.

  3. A cheese soufle made with a tangy cheese – That is what I would like to try paired with a glass of Provencal Rose. 😋

  4. I think rose would accompany pork chop well for the actual colour combination and the taste would go well together.

  5. Scallops/ prawns / crab/ lobster and any white fish , with white wine . Beef /lamb/ strong cheese with red wine.

  6. Sea food ,crab /prawns and white fish. Also some nice fresh fruit are all good with rose wine.

  7. I would pair a freshly baked baguette, Normandy butter and an over-ripe Brie de Meaux cheese. What a combination!

  8. Oh, the rose would be lovely for a BBQ – grilled hallumi, grilled veggies, chicken and fresh salad.

  9. I would choose Provencal Rosé wine to compliment a wonderful fresh crab salad. Wine would be slightly chilled and would go well with the crab without overpowering the taste and flavour of the crab.
Perhaps accompanied by a slice or two of fresh baked nicely buttered wholemeal bread to soak up and mingle the fresh, succulent sweetness of the crab juices with the mellow tingle and spangle of the wine. Right now please !

  10. I would like a bowl of fresh raspberries because the weetness og the fuit would be lovely with the crispness of the wine.

  11. I would chose fresh raspberries because the sweetness of the fruit would be lovely with the crispness of the wine.

  12. A beautiful apple tart with a good dollop of clotted cream would be my ideal with a rose wine. The sweetness of the wine would complement the sharp tang of apples and cut though the cream.

  13. Provencal Rosé wine would be delicious paired with grilled chicken salad this summer. This is a wine and food we love so a great choice.

  14. Local cheese and crackers would be delicious to accompany the wine. Something simple. Cheers. 🥂

  15. Freshly baked baguette,a selection of chees, crispy salad with tomato, spring onion and apples slices plus a French dressing of course!

  16. I think I would go for langoustines with crusty baguettes and garlic and herb butter. Lots of it.

  17. grilled lamb chops, asparagus and new potatoes followed by a pavlova with lots of cream and fresh fruit!

  18. Provencal rose immediately makes me think of summer, so a lovely al fresco picnic with French cheese and fresh baguettes would be ideal.
