Reasons for trip

Relaxation

We ended up here having booked originally at a hotel on the cliffs above the beach, perfectly ok but along a lethal road, and some way away from any facilities at all. Country Country looks like gingerbread houses dropped onto the beach. It is small, with half a dozen 2 floor buildings each with just a few rooms. It has a tiny reception, rooms spread through the gardens down to the beach, and direct access on to the sandy beach. Rooms are simple, but equipped with everything you need, and typically colourful Jamaican in style. Our room was one of those closest to the beach – literally 6 or 7 steps.

Breakfast was served in their beach restaurant, with a good choice of dishes and amazing coffee! The restaurant also serves food all day, and is a wonderful place to relax over an evening meal.

Negril is a stretch of fantastic beach, bordered with a mix of all inclusive hotels and smaller establishments varying from the 1970’s hippy style to contemporary boutique hotels. At one end is a shopping plaza with a limited range of basic goods and a fair amount of souvenir ‘tat’. There are a lot of beach sellers who are fairly pushy, but always good natured and they do back off once they realise you are not going to buy.

If you are not in an all inclusive hotel, it is often hard to find decent places to eat at reasonable prices in many parts of the Caribbean, but Negril has a fair number of small hotels with their own restaurants, offering good food that wasnt too exorbitant.

We hired a car for a few days and visited other parts of the coast, well worth doing, not that many road signs but always someone happy to direct you (in return for a few cents). Of all the places we have visited in the Caribbean we still retain a fondness for Jamaica, with Country Country as one of our favourite beachfront hotels.
