Reasons for trip

On a search for a cafe we hadn’t been into before and on a Monday when many businesses are closed in Stratford, we ended up in “York Street Kitchen”:http://www.yorkstreetkitchen.com/ for a coffee and dessert. Situated on York Street across from the river, this café has friendly staff and the walls are adorned with depictions of the sandwiches on offer. The brick walls are left exposed so you can see the age of the building on this historic street.

Hot drinks here are basic – no fancy coffees or even hot chocolate – and the coffee is strong. I had a decaf with some sugar and two shots of cream and it still looked quite dark and tasted very strong. There is a good selection of cold drinks, however it was a chilly day and we were looking for something warmer. My sister tried the lemon square which was nice but not as tart as she would have liked and the crust was a bit hard and thick. I tried the hay stack which was described to me as not dark and not milk chocolate with oats and coconut that wasn’t too sweet and it lived up to its description.

Although the sweets were OK, I don’t think I’d return for a coffee and dessert but I would give it another try in the summer months and have a sandwich and cold drink. It opens at 11:00 am during the week and 10:00 am on the weekends. Sunday to Wednesday it closes at 4:00 pm and Thursday to Saturday it closes at 7:00 pm.
