Always on the lookout for a nice afternoon tea, my friend and I tried out the “Wonderland Tea Room and Bake Shop”:https://wonderlandtea.ca/ recently in St. Thomas, Ontario. We were not disappointed.
It is a small establishment in a strip mall and only has seating for around 16 people. However, it is chock full of festive décor related to Alice in Wonderland, even down to the table cloths. There is a themed clock on the wall, lots of photos and memorabilia, and even the bathroom has a saying and painting on the wall with a decorative lock and a wall with a huge mural.
Both members of staff were very friendly and attentive with bottomless pots of tea or cups of coffee. The high tea is usually $22.99 but we had a Groupon that I got for an additional 20% off so each tea ended up being $14.40 each. Even at the original price the cost is reasonable for what you get. There are 20 loose leaf teas to choose from or regular tea if you prefer. In addition to little egg salad, tuna salad, cheese and cucumber, and pinwheel sandwiches, we also each got a couple of little warm sausage rolls. I’m not a sausage roll fan as I find them too rich, but these were delicious. The warm scones were huge and you had your choice of raisins or not. I chose raisin and it was full of them. With your choice of jam you can also have butter or clotted cream. The little desserts are bite size and are just the right end to the meal giving you lots of variety. The “Eat Me” cookie, miniature empire biscuit and little chocolate cup of strawberry cream are delightful.
We’ll definitely be back! Reservations are required for high tea at (519) 633-4421, but not for lunch. They’re only open from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm.
