The Wolfscastle Hotel & Spa, on the main road between Fishguard and Haverford West, is a perfect stop-off point, especially if you are using public transport to tour this part of West Wales (see our Bus Trip review). A beautiful setting with comfortable accommodation and WiFi that actually works, we would make an effort to visit here just for lunch.

It is a lovely place, friendly reception, all the staff are great including in the bar and restaurant. The bar is open for guests, so we enjoyed a very relaxed drink outside in the late afternoon sunshine, then dinner at 7.00pm. We decided on the set menu of two courses, although the a la carte menu also looked very inviting. Sun-dried tomato bread with oil and balsamic vinegar while waiting for the starter (so be careful, very tempting!), then a soft, fluffy souffle inside a delicate pastry case alongside a nutty, beetroot salad, or a tasty meaty terrine, all beautifully presented.

Still part of the set menu, the medallion of Herefordshire beef looks good with extra blue-cheese sauce, very chunky chips plus roast vine tomatoes. Just as good-looking is the beef stroganoff with a red, spicy creamy sauce rather than just a cream-based one, rice and very thin (a bit too thin?) chips in separate dishes. Definitely no room for dessert even though they sounded tempting. Add excellent-value Volande Merlot from Chile at £15, a rich fruity aroma, deep red but very smooth with a long finish, perfect with the oil and vinegar mix to start and the beef dishes as the main.

A welcome break offering lots of extras and special offers over the year.
