Last Thursday we went on a MYSTERY coach trip organised by a local Lincolnshire farmer.
I was thrilled when we arrived at Wisbech where the ROSE FESTIVAL was taking place. This was my first visit to Wisbech & I had never heard about this rose festival. Our first visit was to a model railway exhibition by an enthusiastic club who explained how the intricate details of the layout had been made. We watched the trains chugging round with realistic sound effects. Our next visit was to the Church of St Peter & St Paul. The Rose Fair began in 1963 when rose growers sold rose buds to raise funds for this beautiful church which dates back to Norman times. We marvelled at the stunning 37 floral displays with the theme of ” The World of Fantasy”. The whole town had become involved in this Rose Festival. There were lines of stalls – many of which featured roses. The Methodist Church, Salvation Army Citadel, United Reformed Church & Baptist Church all had Flower Festivals, refreshments & stalls. Local school children were dancing & singing in front of Wisbech Castle & museum. The museum was free & well worth a visit. We walked to the Elwood Brewery & Gardens passing Peckover House & Gardens. The weather was warm & sunny & we all had a fabulous day. I bought a rose brooch to remind me of this special day.
