The hotel occupies what is said to be one of the oldest houses in Lucerne. It is situated in the old part of the city and is convenient for everything – about 10-15 mins walk max. It is also near the newer part of the city, not just the old touristy bits. . It's quite a rambling hotel so wouldn't be ideal for anyone of limited mobility. Although it's extremely old it is well maintained and well modernised. There is a good buffet restaurant and a really excellent hotel restaurant, the Burgerstube which is decorated in medieval style, but serves modern cuisine. I can't comment on the other restaurant in the hotel as I didn't eat there. the staff were extremely friendly.

On Saturday there is a a large farmer's market alongside the nearby river. Our room was not as gorgeous as some of the rooms shown in the brochure, but it was comfortable and pleasant. It was such a delightful place to stay, with quaint old shops all around, that I would not want to stay anywhere else during a winter visit. In the summer I might choose another hotel because I'm not sure this one gets much sun, being in these narrow old and medieval streets but the attractive riverbank river is literally around the corner so even this would not be too much of a problem. In winter, this just adds to the cosiness and rather magical atmosphere. I'm giving it 10 out of 10 assuming that the Silver Traveller is not disabled and can manage uneven floors and some stairs.
